Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Todd Kelly, painter.
Who/what inspires you?
A continuously fluctuating list: Laura Owens, rags to riches stories, anything with a crescendo, very late Picasso, Talking Heads in Rome 1980, Thomas Lanigan-Schmidt, Sufjan Stevens, repetition, younger artists excited about painting, weird-but-true science stories, Malin Abrahamsson (and other people like her who have figured out how to be alive!),Christmas paraphernalia…
What themes do you pursue?
Possibility, curiosity and the like. I grew up embedded in a strict religious sect with well-meaning people who were 100% certain they were right and had no room for difference of any sort. My goal now is to pursue the opposite of that mind-set while retaining the well-meaning part.
I can’t not.
Name some artists you would like to be compared to.
Well, as long as we understand this is fantasy: Hilma af Klint, Courbet, Kandinsky, Cezanne (and any other artist who created a whole new game rather than simply moved the ball forward).
