Who are you and what do you do?
Daniel Heidkamp, Artist
Who/what inspires you?
I’m most inspired when my world appears otherworldly
What themes do you pursue?
This group of landscapes was painted from direct observation. When working ‘on the spot’ I can see in every direction, discern actual color, and feel truly present. The subjects I choose are at once stable and constantly in flux. Attempting to capture the scene with sunlight changing, wind blowing, insects biting, is a type of performance which often fails , but when successful can lead to paintings with uncanny energy. I work with the canvas on the ground, and I’m happy when sands, dirt, rain drops, or flower petals mix into the oil paint. In my practice, I acknowledge the great tradition of observational painting and likewise embrace the immediacy and complexity of abstraction. My aim is to paint with a knowing hand, synthesizing and exploiting the best of what painting has to offer, while moving into ever new and higher realms
Making art, the artistic stance, is the most interesting way I can imagine of being in the world.
