Who are you?
My name is Eva Speer. I live and work in Portland, Oregon. I identify with painting, though I often work with sculptural ideas.
What kind of music do you listen to when you work?
I usually listen to TED talks, sometimes bad television.
What inspires you?
Outstanding art, literature, construction sites, color, materials, natural forces. I am inspired by people who engage in activities simply for the pleasure. I think about people who go to extreme measures to have an experience, such as gate crashers, marathon runners, people who cheat at marathons.
What themes do you pursue?
Booby traps, illusions, surfaces that contradict forms, decoration that is actually structural, transparency and obsfucation, failure. Containers for space. The creation and disintegration of meaning, missing information, mismatched evidence and conclusion. Forms of logic that do not resolve like contradiction and tautology--the idea that the terms of inquiry are repeated in the answer is exciting to me.
